All of the infrastructure that exist today was built on the Taxes collected from business! They already contribute most of the taxes our Govt spends today. It sure isn’t the lower to middle income earners, Most of them some 50 % of our populations pay zero taxes. Let just be honest. Obama wants to raise taxes on income earners of $250k or above, because they are the only ones who pay significant taxes anyway. What you and I would pay would not even scratch the surface of the deficit. Why bother. He is just going where he knows the Money is and he is wrong. There is another way reform our current tax system are create a new one that will bring in the need revenue. Both sides of the argument are correct, We absolutely have to Cut spending and that means laying of public sector employees that we don’t need and can not currently afford. Lets take the post office. It is an out of date redundant federal system that is already replaced by the private sector. why are we still carrying them. They need to be profitable or close thier doors. Today would not be to soon. These types of problems run deep through out the Govt.

You are incorrect. If everyone were to pay their fair share, that would require the approx 50% who pay nothing to ante up and pay their “fair share” – so until that happens give it a rest. Also, growing up my parents also taught me that life is not fair, so stop throwing that word around.

Those roads were originally paths used by people to get from point A to point B. They became roads when local people got together and put down gravel. As time past, people hired a contractor to pave the road. That contractor was paid by the people as they levied their own taxes to pay for it. Eventually, the elected representatives of the state took over the maintenance but the point is, it’s a private business that did the work and still does.
People originally hired Sheriffs to handle law breakers. Those Sheriffs were usually hired by the townspeople when the need arose. Just as circuit court judges were paid by the towns people for their services. Eventually, those services became state and county concerns, still paid for by local people. Each judge or sheriff was an individual who agreed to work for a particular salary and to perform those duties required by the citizenery.
I’m glad to hear your Granfather worked hard and became a success. He did not, however, take advantage of nor did he not pay for the services he used. His success did not depend on a government edict. It was to the advantage of his employees to learn to read, write and do arithmetic. Had they not, he would have had no use for them and would not have hired them. He didn’t hire them because they needed a job. He didn’t pay taxes because it was fair. He paid taxes because he was forced to, just like everyone else. Get off your cloud and stody a little history.

That commerce eventually provided revenue for government to crawl out of the muck and rear its ugly head. At first a benign and benevolent leader of our nation but eventually spawning the progressive, life sucking monolith that it has become. Government did not create business, business created and overfed government until it has become a slobbering parasite, consuming everything in its path.

Once again, the radical liberal has it backwards. Roads, police forces, courts, and fire departments are all paid for with taxes. Your argument is that all money is government money and doled out at the whim (or influence, often bought) of the government. The government operates at the discretion of the people. I’ve come to the conclusion that the only way to control government, local, state, and federal, is to strangle the money. All government programs should end every year. No exceptions. Let the current elected pols vote to renew. Then we’ll see who has the strength of conviction and the back bone to stand up and be counted.
Leave this great country because obviously you can’t figure out that the Government produces nothing but great debt that ourselves and our kids and their kids will have to pony up to cover. Taxes paid for roads police and EVERYTHING else we have stupid.

I wonder if your father would share the same viewpoint of how his business was successful as you. It is easy for those of us who don’t own a business to sit back and make judgements about running one, but we do not have to deal with the overburdening taxes and regulations that business owners do.
In the future you may want to do some fact checking before you make a claim that progressives like Obama just want to get the rich to pay the same amount of taxes as everyone else. Although, I wonder if facts really matter to progressives. Go to the IRS website and look up their statistics and you will see a very different picture than what you have painted. For example, in 2010 the top 1% of income earners payed an effective tax rate of 23.27%. In contrast, the bottom 50% of income earners payed an effective tax rate of 2.59%. That is, the top 1% payed 9 times more of their income than the bottom 50%. This begs the question, what do you progressives mean by “fair”. If this is fair, then you have a very twisted sense of what fairness is. Try to start basing your political ideas on facts rather than what makes you feel good or what your political leaders tell you or what the liberal/progressive media machine pumps out or wherever you get your ideas.

The biggest problem in this country is there are so many Americans who has no brain to understand all the lies the liberal media is pumping out on behave of a president who has no idea about running a business. What doe the federal govt have to do with public schools? Even in lefty Canada the federal govt has nothing to do with K-12 education.
Does it really take 50% of everyones income to provides roads, police and a court system? EVERYONE (even Ron Paul) believes that roads, police and courts are a legitimate and necessary govt functions. NO ONE says that the govt should stop supplying these particlar items. To even bring this up is just stupid.
President Obama and others on the left always assume that all govt functions are federal govt functions. Apart from the FBI, ATF and Secret Service all police is State and local. What percentage of the federal budget is courts and roads? The Federal govt wouldnt need any income tax at all if it just supplied these basic functions.
You also state (from above), ‘and the things we all need to succeed in America.’ Would you care to detail what these absolutely critical ‘things’ are? Was Solyndra one of these necessary things?
When 49% of Americans don’t pay taxes, something is very wrong!! EVERYONE needs to pay “their FAIR SHARE” including those that are in the lower in one brackets. I struggle week to week to pay my bills. But I resent those who expect something for nothing. The “takers” in society. Hypocrisy at its finest! But I do want to emphasize one major point by asking you a few specific questions. What would you consider the “fair share” to be paid to the federal government by, say, someone who makes $100,000 per year? $200,000 per year? $250,000 per year? If you cannot or simply refuse to give a specific percentage, then explain by reference to something concrete (e.g., someone who made $200,000 per year should be x times the amount paid by someone who earns $60,000 per year). If you can’t, the your idea of “fairness” is simply an arbitrary number dependent on the whims and desires of whatever politician and political party (dem or repub) holds power at a particular moment. That, Ms. Kohn, is not just a recipe for disaster; it already has had disastrous consequences for us and our children and grandchildren. For that, I blame you and people like you who blather about “fairness” when “fair” has nothing to do with what you really want.
It is truly unfortunate that someone as ill-informed and obviously ignorant of facts as yourself is possessed of the ability to express their thoughts and beliefs to such a wide audience. If you truly believe the garbage you have written with regard to taxes you have no idea how this government of ours really operates. If you only FEEL that what you have written is the truth you have earned all of the disdain that others have posted. How in the world can you look at the facts and spout off such useless drivel. “Tax the rich, they have it. Gotta pay their fair share.” The typical liberal screams when anything to do with the budget comes up. Well let’s look at that. The top 400 Americans had a net worth of $1.53T in fiscal year 2011 according to Forbes magazine. The national debt as of this morning was almost $16T. This means if we confiscated all of the wealth of all of the top earners in the Forbes 400 TODAY and applied it directly to the debt, it wouldn’t even drop the debt by 10%. The problem isn’t too little revenue, it is too much spending. We are borrowing money from China to give back to them in the way of grants…this is madness.
As for taxing the rich, let’s look at some real time numbers, shall we? According to the National Taxpayers Union, in 2009 the top 10% of earners paid over 70% of the country’s tax burden. The top 50% paid a staggering 97.74%, while almost half the country currently pays NOTHING at all in taxes. Fair share? Where’s their fair share?
Finally, saying your grandfather didn’t have to pay for roads or police protection, schools or other infrastructure shows that you are woefully uneducated as to how our system of government functions. Those roads, schools, police forces and other infrastructures were built and maintained by TAXES, which you stated in your article that your grandfather willingly paid. He ABSOLUTELY paid for all of those things and more by taking from the profits of his business and handing the money to the government to provide those services and that infrastructure. Unfortunately, liberals have always had this vision of government as some cosmic fairy godmother with a magical money wand that bestows upon whomever it will money and other goods out of the kindness of its collective heart. Balderdash! The government has never given one dime to anyone that it did not TAKE from someone else. The government is not some never-ending cash register; in order to function, it must take money from the private sector, and only wisdom in how this money is taken and on what the money is spent will create the economic climate needed for this country to grow. Unfortunately, as has been proven in too many places to enumerate here, increased taxes do NOT result in increased government revenues; they never have and they never will. The “tax the rich” mantra is something all the liberals say to stir up class warfare and envy and cover up the fact that they are spending America into the danger of third-world status. Only by targeted budget cuts and wisdom in new spending can this runaway horse be bridled and put back on the path to sane economic principles. Trying to stir up class envy by claiming that businesses aren’t built by the people who pay for them is ludicrous, and well beneath someone of your perceived intellectual cloth.

And nobody objects to paying taxes, they object to an endless increase in taxes to ever feed the always growing frivolous and frauded government spending.
I’m not trying to make special interest social programs that pretend to help when they actually work tirelessly like parasites to maintain a status quo dependence, to keep the downtrodden oppressed and embittered and ever misdirecting their hate towards those who wish to free them of their perpetual, and desperate state of dependency. But I am making those leach social programs rich because my taxes are thrown at them regularly, keeping them well funded, and due to the lax restraints and lack of more efficient targeting, well frauded and capable of skimming. I can’t help that because Democrats control my money right now.
You see, one thing I’ve learned in my life is that government will never stop needing more money, and even after government has all of the money, they will still need more. And another thing I’ve learned that $10 to government is the same as $10,000 to government, but 10 dollars left in the economy can produce 100 dollars, and the jobs that were needed to make that happen.
I can’t believe your thinking. You said your father used roads and bridges “he didn’t pay for”. Are you mathematically challenged? If your father’s small business paid taxes, he sure did pay for it. Government produces nothing. It earns nothing. Your thinking and that of Obama have the facts backward. Government needs the private sector not the other way around. The private sector needs only a bare minimum of government – to keep chaos at bay, that’s it. And the money needed to provide that minimal service must be paid for by the private sector.
One other point. CEO stock options and restricted stock grants are NOT taxed at a lower rate than wage income. They are taxes as ORDINARY INCOME when contingencies on ownership disappear. IF the CEO chooses to hold the stock, any ADDITIONAL gain is taxed as capital gains – the exact same treatment that you or I would receive if we bought stock and held it. This is typical liberal misinformation that is used for propaganda purposes to fuel class warfare. Your statement was born out of ignorance or deceit – take your pick.

Do you not realize that the word public you seem to so loosely use is “us”. It was our tax dollars that paid for the roads, schools, etc. It was private labor that built them. It is private labor that improves or repairs, and our tax dollars that pay for it. When you have never worked in a for profit scenario, you will tend to think like what was spoken. If you have never actually had to earn it, you believe that it was never done but given. If the next generation doesn’t move away from this entitlement mentality, our country will definitely be at a point of financial no return.

Government does not generate revenue. They collect taxes and fees that pay for the public utilities, roads, schools, etc. If the entrepreneurs of this Great Country (your grandfather included) did not generate income by their hard work to build companies (that pay taxes) and employee people (who pay taxes), the government would not have money to provide any services for the public. I think your reasoning is ass backwards. Your grandfather would think you are a bleeding heart liberal that thinks the government should provide from cradle to grave. If you look toward Europe, you can see how that theory is working. It is called socialism.

I too am disappointed in your article. Government monies come from the people’s taxes. The government works for the people, by the people and was of the people. This has changed. The present President is using government as a tool to disassemble the most precious Democracy on earth. His motive is a puzzle, but the sooner we switch gears, get back to basics and spend our taxes, including those working people have been left out of the loop, on infrastructure and important only uses of government monies, get rid of perk and let states do improvements and revamping of education in their states, the better. Please print a retraction and rewrite a more intelligent article that puts government in its place-support with armed forces, infrastructure, FBI, CIA, monument buildings, & the IRS. If you let a private council of businessmen & women be on a US govt board to extract one or two trillion from the annual budget, you would be amazed at how quickly we could get back on budget.
